Branches of Psychology

Before discussing the branches of psychology, it is worth discussing a little about what this subject is all about. Well, Psychology is predominantly the study of mind though different people have different concepts about this field of study. It is without doubt among some of the most dynamic sciences since it deals with the ever dynamic human mind and behavioral patterns of individuals. Studying psychology leads to a better understanding of individuals and more importantly community behaviors. There are a wide range of different branches of psychology however following are some of the most basic being discussed.

1. Abnormal Psychology:

Abnormal psychology is among some of the most common and fundamental branches of psychology. As the name implies, abnormal psychology deals with the behavioral abnormalities in human psyche. Being as wide a subject, it covers quite a number of different areas of disorder. From the most common type of disorder like depression to mental retardation, neuroses, sexual digression, every abnormality is being dealt under this branch of psychology. For alleviating these ailments, hypnosis is normally used by the psychologists.

 

2. Behavioral Psychology:

Behavioral psychology is also referred as neuroscience or psychobiology. Now as the name pretty much says it all, this branch of psychology is all about dealing with behavior of individuals. However, though appears simple, behavioral psychology focuses on the physical performance of the brain cells and hence leads to more serious forms of treatments when it comes to alleviating the disorder. Normally, electrolytic lesions are used for treating the patients who are having a disorder, falling under this branch of psychology.

 

3. Clinical Psychology:

Well, clinical psychologists are those who you often find at clinics getting fees and treating people by counseling them. It deals with a scientific study of getting to know the problem and then treating the psychological issues, inflicting individuals for one reason or another.

 

4. Community Psychology:

Community psychology is among some of those branches of psychology that are being considered very important to teach in almost every psychology department of the educational institutes. The study of community psychology helps you understand the behavior of individuals of a particular community.

 

5. Developmental psychology:

This branch of psychology deals with the changes occurring in a human being’s life from childhood to adolescence. It involves a scientific study of the development of an individual, both intellectually and emotionally and the reasons that lead to the behavioral changes in a person throughout the course of his/her life.

Aside from these branches of psychology, there are various other branches as well like Forensic psychology, educational and cognitive psychology that are widely being taught and studied around the world to understand human behaviors in a better way.
